This classic is from the last model year of the Shelby-American built Shelbys. For the '68 and '67 they began marketing these as the 'Cobras' and you can see that labelling on the intake filter. The Shelby line as a whole was born out of the Ford / Carroll Shelby partnership in the 24hr Le Mans race where they co-designed the Ford GTs. This story was very recently brought to main-stream light in the film Ford vs. Ferrari which details the story of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles throughout the design process.
This '68 GT500 sported a 428 cc engine with a single four barrel carburetor that was rated for 360 HP, making this an incredibly fast car for the day. The convertible version was also very rare to see. This vehicle came with the 3speed automatic transmission vs. the optional 4 speed manual.
The interior features a two tone brown leather that compliments the exterior color without making too much of a statement. The steering wheel, floor mats, and even the center console feature the trademark 'Cobra' that became synonymous with this line of sports cars.
While this series was brought back in 07 to the modern mustangs, these classics retain their uniqueness in the mix of racing inspired upgrades from the famous Shelby that will likely never fade. The Shelbys have always faired quite well across the classic car resale market and, other than a dip during the financial crisis where most vehicles slumped, continue to be highly coveted.
