After some difficult life circumstances left me wondering about the rest of my life, I realized that my passion for cars had been put on a shelf for all the wrong reasons. I knew I wanted something fun in the curves but also had a fairly tight budget and needed something economical. After taking a friend's Honda Accord to an autocross event I was hooked and started looking at small hatches such as Subaru Imprezas, VW Golfs and Mazda 3s, as well as the smaller roadsters such as the Audi TT, BMW Z3 and Mazda Miata. I was turned on to the MAZDASPEED MX-5 Miata, a two year limited run of the only factory turbo Miata ever produced, and test drove one locally that was not for sale. I was in love! So the search was on. After many months of looking locally and in nearby states I finally found one in the color and condition that I wanted. It was a 12 hour drive away so I enlisted the help of a friend to go pick it up. She is production number 1624 of 4000 in 2004, with only 5428 ever produced, and only 2255 made in Velocity Red Metallic. I bought her to be my daily driver with the intent to autocross her regularly and dubbed her the Red Gecko. That plan has morphed into autocross, HPDE and the occasional canyon drive with the local Miata club. Every time I come home after driving or racing this car I have a smile on my face and my daughter loves to go on drives with "daddy and his red car". And the rest, well history is still being written for this story but it's been a fun run and I expect she will be with me for many years to come. There's a good chance she will be passed on to my daughter as she comes of age and starts driving.
One of my most memorable experiences to date in this car was fueling up on the way to the track one cool Saturday morning. A gentleman walking out of the convenience store looked at my car with numbers on the side and started laughing. I said to him "Good morning. I know it's no Ferrari but I'm chasing my dream of racing cars on a road course today. What are you doing today?" He stopped laughing, turned toward his indescript 4 door family sedan and left without a word. Most people just have no idea how much fun these little roadsters are.
