This car, built by Karmann and designed by the Italian design studio Ghia, is a 1600cc 4 cylinder air cooled engine with a top speed of 90 mph. KG was known as “the poor man’s Porsche”; even an old 1962-63 era advertisement from VW captioned a KG with race motif paint “You’d lose”.
I have fond memories of my family’s KG from when I was a kid. This one is named “Pepi”, in honor of my mom who loved “Buggy”, our 1964 KG Coupé. She cried the day my parents sold it when the new owner drove away. Pepi came into our lives when Michael was shopping for a new daily driver and we happened to see an ad on Craigslist by coincidence for a different KG. I saw the KG post and remembered Buggy and teased what fun it would be to have a KG. The Craigslist KG didn’t work out. We spotted Pepi on another website and made an 800-mile day trip to Memphis IN to meet her at an auto consignment store.
We aren’t sure what it was about her that grabbed our attention, but maybe it was her bright color—Signal Orange or Amber, depending who you ask. She originally was a California girl that spent most of her life in Nevada. She relocated to Ohio about 3 years ago She joined our household in June of this year.
