At the top of the considerable Audi pile sits the R8, and this 2014 model is a great example of the terrific package of features this car has to offer. It comes in a stunning matte-blue wrap with black inserts, black-finish wheels and other detailing. This powerful car will knock your socks off in looks as well as performance.
When you compare the 2014 model to the original form 6 years previous, the outside doesn’t appear to have changed a great deal --- with the R8, this isn’t exactly a problem, though --- but there are many great feature upgrades, which will be mentioned below. The exterior features the same great aerodynamic lines that many have come to love in this Audi supercar.
The distinctive black inserts are there, along with the wrapped matte-blue finish, front-end trunk, custom grille, black detailing (including on the 19” wheel rims) and 13 percent carbon fiber additions combined with the aluminum in the chassis. In fact, this R8 shares the chassis with the Lamborghini Huracan, and its new chassis makes it 50kg lighter than the original R8, but 40 percent stiffer.
This R8 features a powerful V10 engine that can rev past 8,000rpm. The displacement is 5.2L and this engine delivers 550hp and 398lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60mph in just 3.2 seconds. There’s no turbocharger, and this R8 --- like all others of this time --- is a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission. This model year got rid of the manual transmission, which I thought was fine but I know some people do crave a stick.
Besides the engine and reinforced aluminum chassis with carbon fiber, the R8 boasts a lot of great engineering tech that make it fun to drive. Examples include double wishbone aluminum suspension and electromechanical steering which allow this car to take even the tightest, trickiest corners with ease.
Finally, like other Audi vehicles, this R8 comes with the quattro AWD system, and is able to distribute its power to each axle with ease.
The inside of this 2014 R8 is simple but plush and elegant with nice soft-touch materials and comfortable, supportive sport seats. You’ll find a racing-style flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, a fully digital instrument cluster with Audi’s Virtual Cockpit that displays your navigation and infotainment content, too. This is in lieu of a separate central infotainment screen. It’s customizable and looks great when you’re driving. You’ll hardly take your eyes off the road.
Despite its supercar credentials, the 2014 Audi R8 is surprisingly well-equipped with storage. You’ll find storage behind the front seats, in the central arm rest, a glove box and additional spaces for your smartphone, keys or something else in the central stack.
The R8 is not just built with the same chassis as the Lambo Huracan, but can compete with it in virtually every other way, too. The main difference is that for a car like this with a Lamborghini or Ferrari badge you would pay a lot more. The Audi R8 is surprisingly affordable, though still firmly in the luxury bracket. It’s a performer, loaded with great features and seriously fun to drive.
