Amidst all the new options for buying and selling cars, going private is still one of the most lucrative options. Those fancy stores, all the land, and tons of salespeople all cost money which ultimately cuts into how much you can get for your vehicle when you sell it to a dealer or online service. As such, many people opt to list their vehicles themselves to find a buyer willing to pay more than the dealer, but less than the dealer would have charged. It’s a win-win for both parties!

Don't Buy Without Fully Vetting the Vehicle!
That said, there are some things you need to pay more attention to when buying privately. For instance you should always run through a quick checklist to make sure you’re buying the right car. The last thing you want is to get something that has issues or you didn’t do your full due diligence on!
Once you find a car that you know you want to buy, the next thing you have to make sure of is that you get all the necessary documents. This is something the dealers would normally do for you, but is really quite simple. There are a few main documents needed to sell your car privately in Texas - we go into detail in that article - a Bill of Sale, the signed title, odometer disclosure and an application for Texas Title.
For this article we are just focusing on the Bill of Sale. This document is an important part of the process because it verifies that both parties have agreed to specific terms in the deal including the amount of money and odometer reading.
Not all Texas Bill of Sales are the Same
Beware, some ‘Texas Bill of Sale’ downloads that I found didn’t require both parties signatures for some reason. That’s why I recommend the form linked below. It not only has both parties, but also a duplicate so that buyer and seller can keep one. Of course, the buyer needs it to file with the state, but the seller should have one too! Imagine if the buyer ends up not providing all the money, or something goes wrong. You don’t want to rely on their generosity of providing the crucial legal document!

If you’re still a bit hesitant on handling this process, we understand. Most people don’t buy cars that often and being on your own for the paperwork can be stressful. Topmarq offers the best of both worlds by having fully vetted and inspected privately-owned listings to ensure full transparency, which sells cars faster. It can also facilitate paperwork completion and uses an escrow-based system that makes scammers a thing of the past. The buyer gets all the necessary paperwork in an easy download to take to their nearest Texas Tax Assessor.
