There are few things more fun and exhilerating for a car enthusiast than gettting behind the wheel of an over-powered vehicle and pushing it to its limits. For this car enthusiast , at least.
That's why I'm starting this list of great Texas race tracks for others to get check out and enjoy. Check back often as I plan to keep updating this list as I hear from more people and get to experience them first hand.
Houston Race Tracks
Houston is known for a lot of things - oil, hurricanes, big trucks, you name it. But one very strong passtime in the area is car enthusiasm in all its forms. As such it’s not surprising that from the middle of the city you are within a 30 minute drive of nearly a dozen great racetracks. Below are some of our favorites. Comment below if you have one you love and we’ll check it out and add it to the list!
MSR Houston
This mixed race car track and separate outdoor karting track is a fun option for all levels of skill and age. They do regular racing courses for both cars and motorcycles on their main track. They also have one of the largest outdoor karting tracks that brings a lot of younger enthusiasts out on the weekends. With a lot of onsite rentable storage facilities, this is a great Houston option for weekend racing. Check out MSR in the south of Houston off 288
Houston Motorsports Park
Houston motorsports is a dual racing facility with a drag strip in addition to a new oval race track. Opening in 2021, the new car track features a ⅜ mile oval track with high banks, asphalt tri-oval with concrete turns that are 80ft wide. 50% of the track infield is paved in concrete and they feature a computerized transponder timing system.

Grandsport Speedway
Grandsport is a location down near Galveston outside of the Houston area. If you’re looking for some high-end experiences, this may be the spot for you. This car race track offers exotic car racing experiences as well as luxury condos to store your vehicle and build out a man cave.
They also offer the option to do a track day by bringing your own vehicle. This is a $200 option that allows you to drive your own vehicle on their track after you’ve done their intro safety course. For those of you looking to see some track time in a project car, this is a relatively affordable option compared to some others.
Dallas and Fort Worth Race Tracks
Texas Motor Speedway
Texas motor speedway is one of the better known tracks in Texas that features a NASCAR All-star race weekend as well as some major indycar events. The track is a quad-oval design front straightaway juts outward slightly, measures 1.5 miles (2.41 km) with banked 20° in turns 1 and 2 and banked 24° in turns 3 and 4.
While they don’t do open track days here, they do offer 3 different racing school experiences that you can join to get some time out on the pavement.
The Richard Petty driving experience offers a course developed by seven-time NASCAR champion Richard Petty. It offers the opportunity to get behind a real NASCAR and hit speeds up to 165 mph. I'm not the biggest NASCAR fan, but I definitely enjoyed getting to drive one of the cars. That's me above looking about 10 years old when they let me clock some laps with this school.
The Mario Andretti racing experience puts you behind the wheel of a real Indy-style race car with an instructor guiding you around the track via your racing electronics. This is a cool option to get inside of an open wheel racecar.
Eagles Canyon Raceway
ECR is a Private, World-Class FIA Spec 2.7 Mile Road Course with 15 total turns and over 200 Feet of elevation change. A 2200 ft long back straight lets you hit those top speeds others won’t.
But much more importantly, it is a community and playground for motorsports enthusiasts to drive at the limit. Unlike texas motor speedway, this is a great Dallas area option for getting your own vehicle out on the track and pushing it to the edge.
They have regular open track days for those looking to participate that are easily found on their website.
